Caladium Bulb

Caladium are fast-growing tropical aroids from South America that have beautiful, tissue-paper-thin leaves with striking colors. Each leaf looks different from the last, and each is a breathtaking work of art.

In nature, this plant experiences a wet season and a dry season. To keep Caladiums happy houseplants, we replicate this phenomenon each winter by allowing the plant to dry and the foliage to die back starting in the fall. We withhold water as the days get shorter and keep the bulbs dry until the following spring.

Although these plants are often grown outdoors in warmer climates, we love the pop of color they add to indoor spaces.

Dormant tubers only sold in spring.

How to Grow Indoors

• Plant one bulb 1-2" deep in a 6" pot with a drainage hole using well-draining soil. The growth points (pointy, lumpy side) should face up.
•  Grow in bright, indirect light.
•  When new growth appears, water and fertilize regularly through the growing season. We water when the top 1-2" of soil is dry to the touch.
• Stop watering completely when the foliage starts to die back in late fall. Let the soil dry, trim off the dead leaves, and keep the pot dry until spring. Each year, the plant will come back bigger!

Varieties

• Pink Symphony: The mature leaves of this strap-leaf variety are transparent pink with a network of dark green veins.
•  White Wing: This strap-leaf variety has white leaves with a hazy green margin and a small pop of red at each sinus.
•  Miss Muffet: Lime green leaves with hazy white veins and red freckles make this one of our favorite fancy-leaf varieties.
•  Florida Clown: One of the most sought-after varieties of Caladium bicolor, the green heart-shaped leaves are flecked with white and red spots.
